Temple of Artemis at Brauron: A Sacred Sanctuary of Ancient Greece
The Temple of Artemis at Brauron, located in Vravrona, about 38 kilometers southeast of Athens, is one of the most important and lesser-known archaeological sites in Attica. This ancient sanctuary, dedicated to Artemis, the goddess of the hunt, wilderness, and childbirth, played a significant role in the religious and social life of ancient Athens.
Historical Significance
Dating back to the 6th century BCE, the sanctuary of Artemis at Brauron was a major pilgrimage site for Athenians, especially women. The temple served as a place of worship and protection for young girls and women, as Artemis was believed to safeguard them during childbirth and adolescence. The sanctuary also hosted the Arkteia festival, a religious celebration where young girls dressed as bears (arktoi) performed dances and rituals to honor Artemis.

Architectural Features

Although much of the temple is now in ruins, visitors can still see remnants of the columns, the stoa (covered walkway), and a stone bridge that crosses the nearby Erasinos River. Visitors can see votive offerings, statues, pottery, and jewelry that were dedicated to Artemis. One of the most famous exhibits is a collection of small statues depicting young girls who participated in rituals at the sanctuary. These artifacts offer valuable insights into the religious practices and social customs of ancient Greece.
